Book Description
Brassaé, born in Hungary as Gyula Halasz in 1894, began his artistic apprenticeship in Berlin before moving to Paris and launching a career that would establish him as a key figure in the evolution of photography. Brassaé\'s importance as a photo-grapher was recognized early in his career, affording him a privileged position from which to witness the varied aspects and milieus of Parisian life during the 1920s and 1930s. During and just after the war, Brassaé collaborated with other artists and writers, and displayed his own artistic proficiency in multiple domains including theater, cinema, sculpture, drawing, and writing. The late 1940s marked the beginning of a new period in Brassaé\'s life, during which he married and became a naturalized French citizen. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he traveled extensively and executed his original graffiti compositions that would acquire international fame. Toward the end of his life, the artist returned to reading and writing.Brassaé, who remained at the cutting edge of avant-garde, refused to espouse a single style; his rich body of work exceeds definition. This illustrated biography is based largely on unpublished documents and photographs from the artist\'s personal archives. The author shares stories told to her by Brassaé\'s wife Gilberte and by several of the artist\'s friends, including Henry Miller, Miré, Henri Michaux, and Raymond Queneau. Previously unpublished examples of Adams\'s early images show how he worked through the day, using changing light and different vantage points to interpret a subject. A fascinating comparison of his darkroom techniques is given in two printings of a 1948 negative of Mount McKinley, made in 1949 and 1978 to very different effects, one brooding and luminous, the other crisp and monumental. (The conventional wisdom is to prefer the earlier, but this reviewer loves them both.) The text by John Szarkowski, director emeritus of New York MoMA\'s photography department, gives biographical details and gracefully places Adams in the history of 20th-century photography and the conservation movement. Impeccable technical standards were a hallmark of Adams\'s work, and this book follows his tradition. Each black-and-white image is a tritone, meaning that it was printed from three different plates corresponding to different parts of the original photograph\'s gray scale, resulting in an extremely rich chromatic range. Light really does appear to glisten off a wet rock, and white aspens to glow. The images have been very carefully chosen, each page of a double spread complementing the other. From 1948 to 1976 Ansel Adams produced seven portfolios, each a limited edition of 10 to 15 signed photographic prints. This book reproduces all 90 of these superb images, including many of Adamss most famous monumental landscape photographs and some remarkable, less familiar portraits and architectural studies. The Portfolios of Ansel Adams was first published in 1977. In 1981 it was decided to take advantage of new printing technology and also to have the book redesigned. In this new printing, the typography from the introductory texts of the original portfolios was faithfully reproduced. In addition, new laser-scanned separations were made of all the images to guarantee the best possible reproduction of the photographs. In his eloquent introduction, John Szarkowski observes that of all Adams publications, his portfolios most clearly represent his personal view of the meaning of his work.

Capa\'s (1913-1954) photographs have become icons of the horrors and futility of war. This volume contains some of his most dramatic pictures of the battles he covered?the Spanish Civil War, the Japanese invasion of China in 1938, the European theater during WWII, the Israeli War for Independence in 1948 and the French-Indochina War. Capa risked his life to capture these images, going ashore in Normandy with the first wave of troops to hit Omaha Beach on D-Day, parachuting into Germany with American troops in 1945 and accompanying French soldiers on a mission in Vietnam, where he was killed when he stepped on a land mine. 荒木经惟，1940年出生于东京平民区。1963年，从国立千叶大学工学系摄影专业毕业，进入日本著名的电通广告公司任摄影师。1964年获得日本摄影界的殊荣——第一届“太阳奖”。1999年成为太阳奖的评委会主席。他从1971年自费出版了以新婚旅行为题材的成名作《感伤的旅程》以来，发表了大量作品，出版了200册以上的专题摄影集，名声越来越大，而成为目前日本最具国际影响的摄影家之一。著名导演竹中直人的电影《东京日和》正是以荒木经惟和妻子的故事改编的。
第一次看到荒木经惟作品的人往往评价都很极端，不是极端贬低就是极端褒扬，其实直到现在，他都是一个具有争议性的人物，包括他选择的那些拍摄对像、猥亵色情的拍摄方式，以及他的摄影观念。从生活场面到女性裸体，他和这些看似没有关联的拍摄对象之间建立了一种感情，他认为这就是人生。从徕卡到Lomo，除了休息时间，他几乎没停止过快门，甚至被称为日本街头摄影之父。
记者（以下简称记）：您天天机不离手，把发生在眼前的一切都记录下来，相当于用照片来写日记。您是什么时候开始使用这种方式的？
荒木经惟（以下简称荒木）：我1963年从国立千叶大学工学系摄影专业毕业，进入电通广告公司任摄影师。每天下班后就开始使用各种器材进行拍摄，慢慢地形成了随时记录的习惯。
记：为什么要选择用摄影，而不是写作或者音乐呢？
荒木：因为摄影能够更直接地反应我想表现的东西，是直接通过眼睛来体会的。
记：您的作品90年代开始频频出现在西方艺术现场，在中国的展览也同样引起了广泛的关注。中国、日本、欧美，拥有完全不同的文化背景和底蕴，您认为您的作品是如何让这些不同国家不同背景的人们普遍接受的呢？
荒木：首先感谢大家对我作品的认可，我认为是我的作品结合了东方和西方的共同点。虽然大家生活在不同的文化背景下，但是很多想法和我产生了共鸣，才会在完全不同的几个现场同时得到大家的关注。
记：对于大多数人来说，私人性的生活并不愿意过多地展示，而您却将高度私人化的影像和大众分享，以此模糊私人性与公共性的界限。那么您希望通过这种拍摄方式得到什么，或者说希望读者得到什么样的感受呢？
荒木：在1970年，我曾经把女性人体隐私部分的照片放大进行展示。当时的想法其实并不是为了展示而展示，而是想证明自己进入30岁已经成为了一个真正的男人，不过反响并不是很理想。之后我改变了拍摄方法，开始尝试去拍摄一些私人性生活的作品，通过这种方式我不仅得到了认可，也慢慢有很多人关注我的存在。我希望通过这些照片，读者能感受到真实的性的世界，而不是偷偷摸摸地去想象。
记：您以一年十几本的速度出版了近两百本摄影集，还开设摄影专栏，平时也只是呆在东京拍摄照片。很多摄影师都认为创作存在着瓶颈，到一定的程度就缺少灵感。而您是如何保持如此高速的拍摄，又不让自己和读者觉得重复和枯竭的呢？
荒木：我出生在东京的台东区三之轮，对于我来说那里是养育我的子宫，相信很多人看了我拍的东京的照片会有一个共同的感觉，就是在东京也有农村，也有故乡！而且我觉得东京每时每刻都在变化，那么我随时都在进行的拍摄就不会给读者带来重复的感觉。
记：记得您说过妻子的照片是您最好的照片，可是您如今的地位在不断地提高，在这个过程中您拍摄了无数被人肯定的照片，为什么妻子的照片依然是最好的照片呢？
荒木：我的妻子是我在电通公司的同事，经过了3年的恋爱结合在一起的。曾经出版过一本《我的爱，阳子》。在制作这本影集的时候，我对于照片中的阳子有了很深很深的恋爱感情，从认识她到出版这本影集经过了8个年头，从一起看的第一部电影到一起吃饭、恋爱、旅游、结婚、生活，我一直都在拍摄她，所以她的照片是我最珍爱最喜欢的，那是最可爱的、我爱的女人。
记：我看到过这样几张照片，就是您妻子在去世时的照片，您在她的病床前拉着她的手，还有她的遗容。相机能够去记录已经逝去的生活，但是在某些悲痛的时刻，这样做会不会对自己和对他人显得有些残酷呢?
荒木：她是我的伴侣，在悲痛的时刻我记录下她的遗容是为了自己永远不会忘记她，也是为了给后人留下一个深刻的回忆。
记：您拍摄的《花阴》等摄影作品在很多地方进行了展览，包括在上海。这个题材中植物和人似乎有着某种联系和暗示？
荒木：是有种生和死的暗示和联系。其实我的很多作品都在表现这个主题，但是我还是希望看到这些作品的读者有自己的理解和想法。
记：田中直人扮演您，中山美穗扮演您妻子的电影《东京日和》，就是以你们合写的书《东京日和》为蓝本，您觉得这个影片拍得真实吗？是不是符合您当时的生活状态呢？
荒木：这部电影是根据我们合写的书《东京日和》为蓝本而拍摄的，拍得很真实，符合我们当时的生活状态。不过电影成功的理由不是这些，而是演员们没有去刻意来模仿我们，和真实的我们保持了一些距离，因此他们可以充分发挥了自己的实力，给大家留下了深刻的印象。另外，这部电影里面我本人也扮演了一个角色呢，呵呵！
记：你的作品似乎总是充满争议性，在日本国内也是如此吗？
荒木：是的，不过我认为一幅作品有些争议性总比没有任何反应得好，这样更能让读者接受和关注。但其实在日本国内，我的作品已经成为一种自己的风格，得到了大家的认可。
记：记得在一次访谈中您表示您的摄影作品并非是艺术，而它们却在日本国内外的艺术界受到了极大的推崇和反响，您觉得这是不是一种矛盾？
荒木：不，我不认为它们属于艺术之间的矛盾。其实应该这么说，我拍摄的作品是另类的一种艺术，从它们受到日本国内外艺术界的反响就足以说明这些作品引起了读者的共鸣。
记：您最疯狂的拍摄经验是什么？
荒木：那应该是在拍摄过程中发生的恋爱或者情事。在拍摄过程中我们会忘记普通的生活，因此被拍的女性和我的关系是和性有关的。
记：您使用数码相机吗？
荒木：噢，我几乎不用。我使用的相机很多，徕卡、宾得，还有很多照片都是用苏联制的Lomo 相机拍摄的。
记：您拍摄照片过后是不是会利用Photoshop等软件进行后期处理？
荒木：我很少利用photoshop等进行后期处理
记：日本的数码相机应该已经是普遍流行了，而您的摄影集也在日本热销不断.会不会有越来越多的人在模仿您的风格和拍摄手法来记录自己的生活呢？
荒木：我希望大家不是纯粹地模仿我的风格和拍摄手法，来拍摄和记录自己的生活，而是加入自己的想法，把风格变为自己的才会真正地成功。

第一章 采访哪里能有新闻：寻找独家新闻 印第安那州韦恩堡《新闻前哨报》的斯蒂夫·林森迈耶听到暗房里的紧急时间无线电频道扫描监听器咯咯咯地响了起来。“有建筑物着火了”。他连忙往窗外望去，只见黑压压的雨云遮天蔽日，阵阵闪电划破了遥远的天际。林森迈耶正犹豫着要不要顶着将至的暴雨冲出门去，他的老板基思·希钦斯从大厅冲了出来，边跑边大叫：“教堂着火了。”希钦斯听到无线电里第二次呼叫，要求消防队进一步增加力量，并报告说失火的是圣玛利亚教堂。“见鬼！”林森迈耶冲出暗房，抓起摄影包，气喘吁吁地朝汽车冲去。 他到达圣玛利亚教堂时，引起大火的雷暴正下的凶。刚开拍几分钟，林森迈耶的雨伞就被狂风撕裂了。于是他用无线电通知办公室，让他们再送一些胶卷，多派几个摄影师——同时也多送几条干毛巾。 大火燃烧了一个小时左右，教堂后部的尖塔开始升腾起浓烟。林森迈耶不停地拍照，抓拍到了浓烟吞噬教堂十字架的那一瞬间。第二天，这幅照片占据了当天报纸的几乎整个首版。（图见第10页）无线电扫描监听器报告火灾和事故 大部分生活的新闻照片不是来自本市新闻编辑部的采访安排，而是来自那些警觉的摄影师。他们监测着无线电扫描监听器，以了解各种突发性新闻的线索。警察局、消防局，以及其他紧急事件处理机构会通过低频、甚高频和超高频无线电波段与现场的警察或消防队队员练联系；警察局、公路巡警及海岸警卫队等各种机构会以不同的频率进行通话。无线电扫描监听器会自动地从一个频率调谐到另一个频率，遇到哪个频率有信号就会停下来。无线电扫描监听器可以连续地对已设定监听的频率进行循环扫描。通过监听无线电扫描监听器，摄影师可以听到某个地区所有紧急事件处理部分的通话。假如某个货栈起火了，调度员就会呼叫消防车，并报告起火的详细地点。知道了警报次数（表明火势大小）、消防车的树木、以及出事地点，摄影师就可以判断火情的轻重、事件的新闻价值，以及摄影记者到达现场时大火是否还在继续燃烧等情况。 ……

Book Description
Brassaé, born in Hungary as Gyula Halasz in 1894, began his artistic apprenticeship in Berlin before moving to Paris and launching a career that would establish him as a key figure in the evolution of photography. Brassaé\'s importance as a photo-grapher was recognized early in his career, affording him a privileged position from which to witness the varied aspects and milieus of Parisian life during the 1920s and 1930s. During and just after the war, Brassaé collaborated with other artists and writers, and displayed his own artistic proficiency in multiple domains including theater, cinema, sculpture, drawing, and writing. The late 1940s marked the beginning of a new period in Brassaé\'s life, during which he married and became a naturalized French citizen. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he traveled extensively and executed his original graffiti compositions that would acquire international fame. Toward the end of his life, the artist returned to reading and writing.Brassaé, who remained at the cutting edge of avant-garde, refused to espouse a single style; his rich body of work exceeds definition. This illustrated biography is based largely on unpublished documents and photographs from the artist\'s personal archives. The author shares stories told to her by Brassaé\'s wife Gilberte and by several of the artist\'s friends, including Henry Miller, Miré, Henri Michaux, and Raymond Queneau. From 1948 to 1976 Ansel Adams produced seven portfolios, each a limited edition of 10 to 15 signed photographic prints. This book reproduces all 90 of these superb images, including many of Adamss most famous monumental landscape photographs and some remarkable, less familiar portraits and architectural studies. The Portfolios of Ansel Adams was first published in 1977. In 1981 it was decided to take advantage of new printing technology and also to have the book redesigned. In this new printing, the typography from the introductory texts of the original portfolios was faithfully reproduced. In addition, new laser-scanned separations were made of all the images to guarantee the best possible reproduction of the photographs. In his eloquent introduction, John Szarkowski observes that of all Adams publications, his portfolios most clearly represent his personal view of the meaning of his work.

Capa\'s (1913-1954) photographs have become icons of the horrors and futility of war. This volume contains some of his most dramatic pictures of the battles he covered?the Spanish Civil War, the Japanese invasion of China in 1938, the European theater during WWII, the Israeli War for Independence in 1948 and the French-Indochina War. Capa risked his life to capture these images, going ashore in Normandy with the first wave of troops to hit Omaha Beach on D-Day, parachuting into Germany with American troops in 1945 and accompanying French soldiers on a mission in Vietnam, where he was killed when he stepped on a land mine. 荒木经惟，1940年出生于东京平民区。1963年，从国立千叶大学工学系摄影专业毕业，进入日本著名的电通广告公司任摄影师。1964年获得日本摄影界的殊荣——第一届“太阳奖”。1999年成为太阳奖的评委会主席。他从1971年自费出版了以新婚旅行为题材的成名作《感伤的旅程》以来，发表了大量作品，出版了200册以上的专题摄影集，名声越来越大，而成为目前日本最具国际影响的摄影家之一。著名导演竹中直人的电影《东京日和》正是以荒木经惟和妻子的故事改编的。
第一次看到荒木经惟作品的人往往评价都很极端，不是极端贬低就是极端褒扬，其实直到现在，他都是一个具有争议性的人物，包括他选择的那些拍摄对像、猥亵色情的拍摄方式，以及他的摄影观念。从生活场面到女性裸体，他和这些看似没有关联的拍摄对象之间建立了一种感情，他认为这就是人生。从徕卡到Lomo，除了休息时间，他几乎没停止过快门，甚至被称为日本街头摄影之父。
记者（以下简称记）：您天天机不离手，把发生在眼前的一切都记录下来，相当于用照片来写日记。您是什么时候开始使用这种方式的？
荒木经惟（以下简称荒木）：我1963年从国立千叶大学工学系摄影专业毕业，进入电通广告公司任摄影师。每天下班后就开始使用各种器材进行拍摄，慢慢地形成了随时记录的习惯。
记：为什么要选择用摄影，而不是写作或者音乐呢？
荒木：因为摄影能够更直接地反应我想表现的东西，是直接通过眼睛来体会的。
记：您的作品90年代开始频频出现在西方艺术现场，在中国的展览也同样引起了广泛的关注。中国、日本、欧美，拥有完全不同的文化背景和底蕴，您认为您的作品是如何让这些不同国家不同背景的人们普遍接受的呢？
荒木：首先感谢大家对我作品的认可，我认为是我的作品结合了东方和西方的共同点。虽然大家生活在不同的文化背景下，但是很多想法和我产生了共鸣，才会在完全不同的几个现场同时得到大家的关注。
记：对于大多数人来说，私人性的生活并不愿意过多地展示，而您却将高度私人化的影像和大众分享，以此模糊私人性与公共性的界限。那么您希望通过这种拍摄方式得到什么，或者说希望读者得到什么样的感受呢？
荒木：在1970年，我曾经把女性人体隐私部分的照片放大进行展示。当时的想法其实并不是为了展示而展示，而是想证明自己进入30岁已经成为了一个真正的男人，不过反响并不是很理想。之后我改变了拍摄方法，开始尝试去拍摄一些私人性生活的作品，通过这种方式我不仅得到了认可，也慢慢有很多人关注我的存在。我希望通过这些照片，读者能感受到真实的性的世界，而不是偷偷摸摸地去想象。
记：您以一年十几本的速度出版了近两百本摄影集，还开设摄影专栏，平时也只是呆在东京拍摄照片。很多摄影师都认为创作存在着瓶颈，到一定的程度就缺少灵感。而您是如何保持如此高速的拍摄，又不让自己和读者觉得重复和枯竭的呢？
荒木：我出生在东京的台东区三之轮，对于我来说那里是养育我的子宫，相信很多人看了我拍的东京的照片会有一个共同的感觉，就是在东京也有农村，也有故乡！而且我觉得东京每时每刻都在变化，那么我随时都在进行的拍摄就不会给读者带来重复的感觉。
记：记得您说过妻子的照片是您最好的照片，可是您如今的地位在不断地提高，在这个过程中您拍摄了无数被人肯定的照片，为什么妻子的照片依然是最好的照片呢？
荒木：我的妻子是我在电通公司的同事，经过了3年的恋爱结合在一起的。曾经出版过一本《我的爱，阳子》。在制作这本影集的时候，我对于照片中的阳子有了很深很深的恋爱感情，从认识她到出版这本影集经过了8个年头，从一起看的第一部电影到一起吃饭、恋爱、旅游、结婚、生活，我一直都在拍摄她，所以她的照片是我最珍爱最喜欢的，那是最可爱的、我爱的女人。
记：我看到过这样几张照片，就是您妻子在去世时的照片，您在她的病床前拉着她的手，还有她的遗容。相机能够去记录已经逝去的生活，但是在某些悲痛的时刻，这样做会不会对自己和对他人显得有些残酷呢?
荒木：她是我的伴侣，在悲痛的时刻我记录下她的遗容是为了自己永远不会忘记她，也是为了给后人留下一个深刻的回忆。
记：您拍摄的《花阴》等摄影作品在很多地方进行了展览，包括在上海。这个题材中植物和人似乎有着某种联系和暗示？
荒木：是有种生和死的暗示和联系。其实我的很多作品都在表现这个主题，但是我还是希望看到这些作品的读者有自己的理解和想法。
记：田中直人扮演您，中山美穗扮演您妻子的电影《东京日和》，就是以你们合写的书《东京日和》为蓝本，您觉得这个影片拍得真实吗？是不是符合您当时的生活状态呢？
荒木：这部电影是根据我们合写的书《东京日和》为蓝本而拍摄的，拍得很真实，符合我们当时的生活状态。不过电影成功的理由不是这些，而是演员们没有去刻意来模仿我们，和真实的我们保持了一些距离，因此他们可以充分发挥了自己的实力，给大家留下了深刻的印象。另外，这部电影里面我本人也扮演了一个角色呢，呵呵！
记：你的作品似乎总是充满争议性，在日本国内也是如此吗？
荒木：是的，不过我认为一幅作品有些争议性总比没有任何反应得好，这样更能让读者接受和关注。但其实在日本国内，我的作品已经成为一种自己的风格，得到了大家的认可。
记：记得在一次访谈中您表示您的摄影作品并非是艺术，而它们却在日本国内外的艺术界受到了极大的推崇和反响，您觉得这是不是一种矛盾？
荒木：不，我不认为它们属于艺术之间的矛盾。其实应该这么说，我拍摄的作品是另类的一种艺术，从它们受到日本国内外艺术界的反响就足以说明这些作品引起了读者的共鸣。
记：您最疯狂的拍摄经验是什么？
荒木：那应该是在拍摄过程中发生的恋爱或者情事。在拍摄过程中我们会忘记普通的生活，因此被拍的女性和我的关系是和性有关的。
记：您使用数码相机吗？
荒木：噢，我几乎不用。我使用的相机很多，徕卡、宾得，还有很多照片都是用苏联制的Lomo 相机拍摄的。
记：您拍摄照片过后是不是会利用Photoshop等软件进行后期处理？
荒木：我很少利用photoshop等进行后期处理
记：日本的数码相机应该已经是普遍流行了，而您的摄影集也在日本热销不断.会不会有越来越多的人在模仿您的风格和拍摄手法来记录自己的生活呢？
荒木：我希望大家不是纯粹地模仿我的风格和拍摄手法，来拍摄和记录自己的生活，而是加入自己的想法，把风格变为自己的才会真正地成功。
